ICMAB alumni Dr. Jordi Cabana to lead a new research center in the US

Dr. Jordi Cabana presented his PhD thesis ‘Nitrurs i oxinitrurs de metalls de transició amb estructura antifluorita: síntesi, caracterització i aplicació en bateries de liti’ under the supervision of Dr. Mª Rosa Palacín on 2004.

Cabana, now an Associate Professor of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Illinois Chicago, is coleading a brand new research center: the George Crabtree Institute for Discovery and Sustainability, which will launch new research collaborations and training in STEM fields.

The University of Illinois Chicago is an acclaimed research institution dedicated to the discovery and distribution of knowledge, while Argonne is a multidisciplinary science and engineering research center, where talented scientists and engineers work together to answer the biggest questions facing humanity, from how to obtain affordable clean energy to protecting ourselves and our environment.

The new Crabtree Institute will support and accelerate collaboration between Argonne and UIC. The center is named after Dr. George Crabtree, mentor of Dr. Cabana and who also collaborated with Dr. Xavier Obradors and Dr. Teresa Puig. Amongst the articles in common between them, special mention to one in Nature Physics (DOI: 10.1038/nphys311). Crabtree earned his doctoral degree in 1974 as one of the first doctoral graduates of the UIC Department of Physics.

From ICMAB we congratulate Dr. Jordi Cabana in this new project and wish him all the best!
