Abstract:

I will present the developments that enabled us to recently set a new world record efficiency for organic photovoltaic modules with 14.5% (15.0% on active area).

This includes finite element method computer simulations used to optimize the coating homogeneity and the solar module layout. Specifically, accelerated blade coating enables homogeneous large-area coatings with <5% thickness deviation and laser patterning allows for narrow cell interconnect widths of 120 µm. Barely any performance loss is observed when scaling 4 mm² cells up to >200 cm² modules, with all functional layers being processed in ambient air from non-halogenated solvents.

Short bio:

Andreas Distler obtained his degree in chemistry (2011) and Ph.D. (2015) from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität (FAU) Erlangen-Nürnberg (Germany) in cooperation with Konarka Technologies. Afterwards, he has been leading the research and development activities of Belectric OPV as Director of R&D for two years, before he joined the “Solar Factory of the Future” at FAU in 2017 as founder and leader of the OPV Modules group.
