Monday, 19 FEB 2024
12.00 PM
ICMAB - Sala d'Actes Carles Miravitlles.

Abstract:

Spintronics, the concept of using electron spin as an active variable in electronic circuits, has evolved into a broad and interdisciplinary research field at the intersection of physics, materials science, and nanotechnology. Improved understanding of electronic transport and magnetic interactions in solid-state and discovering new materials enabled rapid progress toward computing applications.

In this talk, we will explain some basic spintronic concepts and related devices. After providing an overview of the current research activities, we will conclude by discussing the future directions in spintronics that may boost the capabilities of contemporary computing and lead to new paradigms in the microelectronic industry.

Short bio:

Can Onur Avci is a tenured researcher at the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC). He received his PhD degree from ETH Zürich in 2015 and was awarded the ETH Medal for the outstanding doctoral thesis. He has worked at MIT and at ETH Zürich as a postdoc before joining ICMAB-CSIC in 2021. Dr. Avci has published 40 papers and delivered over 40 invited talks and seminars at international venues. He is the recipient of an ERC Starting Grant and the 2021 IUPAP Young Scientist Prize in the Field of Magnetism. His research covers a wide breadth of subjects in materials science and physics, with a focus on spintronic materials and devices, and transport phenomena in magnetic heterostructures.
