The ICMAB supports the March for Science and encourages everyone to participate

The March for Science, the largest global march to support politics based on research and evidence, will take place in more than 500 cities around the world on April 22, 2017, which coincides with the International Earth Day. In Spain, the March for Science will take place in Barcelona, Girona, Madrid, Sevilla and Granada.

ICMAB, as a scientific research institute, offers its own endorsement of the march and of the movement that it represents, and encourages everybody, not only the scientific community, to get involved and show solidarity.

In Barcelona, the event will take place from 12 pm to 4 pm at the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB). Instead of being a simple march, the event will include a roundtable about "Politics based on scientific evidence", different shows, live music and food & drinks.

In Spain, the reivindication of the March for Science also includes the claim for a greater investment in R+D+i. The COSCE (Conferederation of Spanish Scientific Societies) has prepared the "Manifest for science", which counts now with more than 3000 signatures (individuals as well as corporations are welcome to sign), and the Scientists Dating Forum, the association that organizes the event in Barcelona, has also prepared the manifesto "Science, what is Science? Why march for Science?", which will be read on the day of the event.

Following the provisional resolution of this year's Severo Ochoa Centers of Excellence call, there has been a hustle and bustle in the press and in the social networks regarding the criteria of excellence of the Severo Ochoa programme, and the fact that the ICIQ (Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia) is not within the selected members.

"Peter Grünberg was one of the first physicists to understand the potential of nascent nanotechnologies for fundamental research. He discovered giant magnetoresistance, or GMR: a large change in electrical resistance induced by a small magnetic field in stacks of ultrathin magnetic and non-magnetic layers." says Albert Fert* in Peter Grünberg's Obituary in Nature.
