On July 17, 2018, the fourth edition of "Científiques a prop" (Getting closer to scientists) organized by AMIT-CAT took place with great success in La Monroe de la Filmo. This edition counted with the participation of Ana M. López-Periago, from the ICMAB, who became second in the audience award, with her talk on "CO2: hero or villain?", in which she talked about the benefits of using supercritical CO2 in the preparation of materials.

Xavier Obradors, Josep Fontcuberta and Gerard Tobias, participate at the 50 Universitat Catalana d'Estiu (UCE) "I tanmateix, la remor persisteix", which for the first time has an edition in Manresa. They will give some lectures within the program of science and technology: From quantum physics to nanotechnology (De la física quàntica a les nanotecnologies). The UCE in Manresa started on Thursday, 5 July, and will finish on Tuesday, 10 July.

10 Early Stage Researchers granted with predoctoral fellowships from the MSCA COFUND DOC-FAM program will start their PhD in advanced functional materials at ICMAB-CSIC, IREC and ALBA Synchrotron
- The first call for this program has been closed offering 10 http://inspiraciencia.es predoctoral grants: 5 of them at the ICMAB-CSIC, 2 at the IREC and 3 at the ALBA Synchrotron
- The DOC-FAM program is the first MSCA COFUND coordinated by a center of the CSIC, the ICMAB
- The next call for the program will offer 12 fellowships to do the PhD in these centers and also at ICN2 and IMB-CNM-CSIC

On 9-10 June 2018, ICMAB participated at the 12th edition of the Barcelona Science Festival with lots of activities. The festival counted with more than 230 activities in 33 different spaces distributed along the Ciutadella Park. 160 institutions (research centers, entities, associations, universities, individuals) participated in the event, organized by BCNCiència (Institut de Culgura de l'Ajuntament de Barcelona), and more than 20,000 attendees joined the festival during the weekend.

29 symposiums at the European Materials Research Society (E-MRS) Spring Meeting 2018, one of the most important meetings in materials science research, which gathers together many professionals of Europe and the world. Many researchers from ICMAB are attending this week this meeting, held in Strasbourg (France), for 5 days (from 18 to 22 June, 2018).
The Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera has developed the program "Bojos per la Ciència" to open the doors of the most relevant research institutes to the most excellent secondary school students. ICMAB joined in 2017 ICN2, IFAE and UAB for the second edition of "Bojos per la Física" and continued this year within this program, which has been a real success.
I’m Laia and I’m from Barcelona. I’m currently studying a degree in Physics at the UB. From July until September I will be doing an internship in the ICMAB analysing ferroelectric materials. I really like to learn new things, especially languages. It’s a good way to discover different cultures. I love to travel every time I can.
The ICMAB has been awarded by the CSIC with the Gender Equality Certificate (Distintivo de Acreditación en Igualdad de Género), in its first edition. This certificate was promoted by the CSIC President, Rosa Menéndez, following an explicit commitment to offer equal opportunities for men and women in their workplaces. The objective of the call was to promote gender perspective in all the CSIC institutes, and to promote measures to eliminate the barriers that women may encounter during their career.
Hello everybody! My name is Josep Maria. I am currently studying the degree of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. I am sharing a flat with other students in Cerdanyola del Vallès during the course but I am actually living in a small village called Vilajuïga, near Figueres. On Thursday, 5 July, the students participating at the ICFO School on Emerging Photovoltaics (2-6 July 2018) came to ICMAB from 3 to 6 pm to visit our research labs. The ICMAB researchers and PhD fellows guided the participants through the different labs and explained them the research performed in our Institute on photovoltaics, including organic solar cells, photonic crystals, perovskites, and oxide photovoltaic materials, and the equipment and facilities for materials characterization.
Every year the CSIC acknowledges the staff members that have received awards or distinctions for their Scientific Merit from other institutions during the previous year. In this year's ceremony, held at the CSIC Auditorium in Madrid on June 28, 2018, they acknowledged Mariona Coll, from the ICMAB.
On Wednesday, 30 May 2018, the ICMAB received the visit of the students belonging to the University Program FUB+GRAN, organized by the Fundació Universitària del Bages (UViC-UCC). The students of this program are all over 55 years old, and they all are curious minds and interested about all different kind of topics.

José Jurado, Milena Cervo and Jan Grzelak received their INPhINIT "la Caixa" fellowship at Caixaforum
On 3 July 2018, CaixaForum Barcelona hosted the ceremony to deliver the INPhINIT "la Caixa" doctorate program fellowships. The event was chaired by the Secretary of State for Universities, Research and Development, Ángeles Heras. Three Research Fellows, out of the 57 granted, have started their PhD at ICMAB: José Jurado from the USA, Milena Cervo Sulzbach from Brazil and Jan Grzelak from Poland.
On 16-17 June the ICMAB participated at the Barcelona Maker Faire. Many members of the NANOMOL group presented their research on encapsulation and hydrogels for biomedical applications. They used the spherification concept as a metaphor for the nanoencapsulation, and the gelification of agar agar for the hydrogels. The stand, which was always full of families and kids, obtained the Maker of Merit award, given by the organization to the best Makers of this year's edition.

Between 18 and 22 June 2018, the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in Teddington (UK) hosted the 6th WMRIF Workshop for Early Career Scientists. From ICMAB, Roberta Verrelli, Francesca Leonardi and Ignasi Fina attended the workshop, which concentrated on exceptional early career scientists in World Materials Research Institute Forum (WMRIF) institutes with the goals of network building, and knowledge and experience exchange, along with the chance to examine facilities of the host institute.

The Association of Women Researchers and Technologists in Catalonia (AMIT-CAT), with the collaboration of the ICE/UAB and the sponsorship of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans (IEC) thanks to the "Premi Sant Jordi Creus Cases 2017", opens the call for the "STEM AMB TU" initiative, in which young women professionals will bring STEM to secondary schools to promote STEM among girls.
- Researchers from the IBB-UAB fabricate 4 molecules of only 7 amino acids with the ability to self-assemble and rapidly and inexpensively form nanomaterials for biomedical and nanotechnological purposes.
- Four peptides were used to create one of the most resistant bionanomaterials described to date, nanocables and mini enzymes to act as a catalyst for the formation of nanomaterials.
- The study, publised in ACS Nano included the collaboration of Isabel Fuentes and Francesc Teixidor from the ICMAB-CSIC.
