The Communication Officers of various scientific institutions participate together at Campus Gutenberg
This year, a group of Communication Officers of various research centers and scientific institutions, including ICMAB, will participate in a workshop at Campus Gutenberg, the summer school on Science Communication and Culture, in Barcelona, on September 18th.
Màrius Tarrés Schüler, who did his PhD in the Inorganic Materials and Catalysis Laboratory, at ICMAB, under the supervision of Prof. Francesc Teixidor, has been awarded with the PhD special prize award (Premi Extraordinari de Doctorat) of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB).
ICMAB Periodical Lecture: "Heat transport and the foundations of thermodynamics in fast processes and nanosystems" by David Jou, UAB.
Campus Gutenberg, the Science Communication and Culture summer school, will take place on September 18th-19th at the Barcelona School of Management of the Universidad Pompeu Fabra.
Quantifying local thickness and composition in thin films of organic photovoltaic blends by Raman scattering
On September 8, 2017, ICMAB and its employees will participate in the "Kids' Day at ICMAB".
- Using ALBA’s synchrotron light, researchers have been able to visualise deformation (sound) waves in crystals and measured the effect on nanomagnetic elements.
- The study, published today in Nature Communications, uses the accelerators’ time structure to record time resolved images with a resolution of 80 picoseconds.
- The methodology offers a new approach for analysing dynamic strains in other research fields: nanoparticles, chemical reactions, crystallography, etc.

One manuscript from Prof. Clara Viñas and her team has been chosen to be highlighted on the ChemistryViews website. The manuscript chosen is "Small-Molecule Kinase-Inhibitors-Loaded Boron Cluster as Hybrid Agents for Glioma-Cell-Targeting Therapy", published in Chemistry-A European Journal, and already qualified as Hot Paper and Frontispiece of the journal.
ICMAB researchers lead a study on the toxicity of iron oxide nanoparticles based on the analysis of specific genetic markers linked to nanotoxicity in the C. elegans organisms.
Part of the experiment, published in the journal Nanotoxicology, has been carried out at the ALBA Synchrotron, in its infrared light MIRAS beamline. The study suggests that nanoparticles can be captured by intestinal cells in their interior, they can interact with cell lipids, and they can activate cellular mechanisms of oxidative stress.
The first edition of BCNspiracy, a science outreach event full of talks and workshops, will take place on September 30th at Cosmocaixa (Barcelona). It is organized by Hablando de Ciencia, a science outreach association that seeks to bring science closer to society and encourage critical thinking.

Dr. Blai Casals Montserrat has defended his PhD thesis, entitled "Magneto-optical spectroscopy and domain imaging of functional oxides" on Friday, September 15th, at 11 am. The ICMAB Sala d'actes Carles Miravitlles was not big enough to fit all the people, including ICMAB colleagues, friends and family, who attented the PhD defense!

A workshop in condensed matter theory will take place at ALBA Synchrotron (Maxwell Auditorium) on September 18, 2017, from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm, with the groups from ICMAB and ICN2.
On Friday, September 8th, we invited our daughters, sons, and relatives, between the ages of 1 and 18, to spend one morning with us. More than 90 boys and girls participated in the interactive learning activities prepared by ICMAB volunteers, to inspire them and introduce them to our research.

Job offer: Predoctoral Researcher - Magnetorheological fluids
BCMaterials is searching for a motivated Predoctoral Researcher for one year (extensible) research and development in Magnetorheological fluids. The research program consists in the synthesis and characterization of magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) for application in magnetic fluids. The first objective of this research will be the development of novel MNP with high magnetization in the nanometric range. The second objective would be the formulation of magnetorheological fluids with great stability and high performance for dampers tuned by magnetic field.
1) Chemical and Physical synthesis of nanoparticles
2) Chemical, structural (X-ray, Mossbauer) and morphological characterization (TEM, DLS)
3) Magnetic characterization (VSM, FMR, etc.)
4) Magneto-rheological characterization and modeling
Qualification and skills requirements:
- MSc in Physics, Chemistry or Materials Science
- Background in experimental research of materials.
- Experience in the use of different equipment and data treatment.
- A team player, who can collaborate with international research groups.
- Good verbal and written communication skills in English and Spanish.

We are very happy to announce that, out of a total of 57 PhD positions offered by the INPhINIT doctoral fellowship for outstanding early-stage researchers, the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB) will welcome three new PhD students, placing the Institute fourth among the 28 centres that were chosen.
PhD students, post-doctoral and young researchers, as well as engineers and technicians, from both academia and industry will be allowed to spend a week on a laboratory of the NFFA-Europe Consortium to gain hands-on experience of advanced services for nanoscience and nanotechnology.
The position is available at the Sensing, Magnetism and Microsystems (http://smm.kaust.edu.sa) group at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST, http://kaust.edu.sa). We conduct research on micro and nano transducers, and our work is driven by applications in fields ranging from multifunctional sensors over energy harvesters and biomedical systems to spintronic devices. Benefiting from the state-of-the art laboratories at KAUST, we are able to exploit the latest fabrication and characterization technologies to push the capabilities and explore new pathways for new devices.

Francesc Teixidor, Invited Professor at the 2017 Boron-Chemistry Micro-Forum held in Nanjing University
In the morning of July 17, the 2017 Boron-Chemistry Micro-Forum started in the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, at Nanjing University (China). Prof. Francesc Teixidor from the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB) was Invited Professor at this micro-forum, which was divided into two sections: one dedicated to Research Progress reports, and the other one to Academic Lectures.
Balance of the NFFA-Europe project at ICMAB, the largest European network for research at the nanoscale
We are very happy to announce that Mariona Coll, ICMAB researcher at the Superconducting Materials and Large Scale Nanostructures group (SUMAN), has been awarded with one of the Research Awards L'Oréal-Unesco "For Women in Science" in the 2017 Call for her project "Nanochemistry: New materials for the efficient conversion of solar energy".
Anna Roig has been awarded with the Albus Award 2017, one of the Scientific Awards offered by Grifols, the pharmaceutical and chemical multinational company. The Award consists of 50,000 € to carry out the project "Albumin-iron oxide nanocages".
