Mariano Campoy-Quiles becomes finalist for a contest with the project SENSORAÏM

The “Idees Innovadores Isabel P. Trabal” award is organised by the Caixa d’Enginyers and is looking for scientific enterprises to boost the development of technological and innovative projects with a focus on engineering and sustainability. The SENSORAÏM project, born at ICMAB, is now eligible for a 10.000 € grant.

Productivity and impact of ICMAB researchers according to the Webcindario h-index ranking

Nine ICMAB researchers appear on the Webcindario h-index ranking. A database which contains information of the researchers working in Spain in different areas, which have a high h-index (higher than a certain threshold). Our researchers appear in 7 different research areas, being Multidisciplinary Chemistry, Inorganic & Nuclear Chemistry and Applied Physics the most common ones.

The ICMAB receives one ERC Proof of Concept Grant for enabling high-temperature superconducting technologies

  • Teresa Puig, group leader of the Superconducting Materials and Large Scale Nanostructures (SUMAN) group, is among the awardees for a project to scale-up a new manufacturing process of high-temperature superconductors.
  • The European Research Council (ERC) has awarded top-funding totalling 9.3 M€ to 62 ERC grant holders via its Proof of Concept Grants. They are meant to explore the commercial or societal potential of their research. 

Poster Prize for the "Madame Châtelet" project at the Biennial RSEF 2019

The poster "The theatre as a tool to spotlight the relevance of women in the history of science", which explains the project "Madame Châtelet and her Instagram followers" has received the Poster Prize at the Biennial of Physics (XXXVII Reunión Bienal de la Real Sociedad Española de Física). Carmen Ocal, one of the founders of the project, presented the poster at the "Women and Physics" symposium, on 16 July 2019. Many ICMAB researchers were present at the #BienalRSEF presenting posters and oral communications. This is a great meeting for physicists in Spain!

The project "Madame Châtelet" awarded with a FGCSIC "Cuenta la Ciencia" grant

The dramatised reading "Madame Châtelet and her Instagram followers", prepared by a group of women of ICMAB-CSIC, was awarded with a FGCSIC "Cuenta la Ciencia" grant in its second call, this year 2019. The project is entitled "El salón de las mujeres sabias" and aims to stimulate and promote the interst in scientific careers by providing examples of women scientists from different periods of our history.

Cristiano Matricardi, PhD fellow at the NANOPTO group (Nanostructured Materials for Optoelectronics and Energy Harvesting) is one of the recipients of the 16h edition of the science photography contest "FOTCIENCIA" awards. From a total of 697 photographies, 7 photos have been chosen by the jury as the winners, and "Trampa de luz" is one of them. Congratulations! 

Alexandre Ponrouch receives the International Battery Association (IBA) Early Career Award 2019 in San Diego

Last week, during the International Battery Association (IBA) 2019 meeting in San Diego, Alexandre Ponrouch, researcher at ICMAB, received the IBA 2019 Early Career Award. The International Battery Association (IBA) awards significant contributions to battery research and technology development that have impacted the advancement of energy storage systems, and for lifelong service to the IBA. The awards were recognized at the banquet of the IBA meeting on Thursday, March 7, 2019. Congratulations to all the winners of IBA2019! 

A year in review: ICMAB most cited articles of 2018

After another year, we look back and see how was this year's scientific research. More than 200 articles, which makes a total of more than 5,200 publications (remember that we reached the 5,000 this last February?) and more than 140,000 citations since the Institue's foundation, in 1986, which makes an average of more than 13,300 citations per year, and 27 citations per article.

NANBIOSIS renews its accreditation as ICTS

On Tuesday, 6 November, the "Consejo de Política Científica, Tecnológica y de Innovación" (CPTI) from the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities updated the new Map of the Singular Scientific and Technological Infrastructures (ICTS) for 2017-2020. NANBIOSIS, whose Director is Prof. Jaume Veciana from the ICMAB, and in which the ICMAB and many CSIC institutes participate, is one of these 29 ICTSthat renewed its accreditation.

Roberta Verrelli and Elzbieta Pach, new Juan de la Cierva postdoctoral fellows at ICMAB

Roberta Verrelli, granted with a Juan de la Cierva-Incorporación fellowship, will work in the group of Solid State Chemistry, with M. Rosa Palacín, in the field of next-generation batteries. On the other hand, Elzbieta Pach, granted with a Juan de la Cierva-Formación, will work with Albert Verdaguer, in the SURFACES group.

Ana M. López-Periago, second prize at the science monologues contest "Científiques a prop"

On July 17, 2018, the fourth edition of "Científiques a prop" (Getting closer to scientists) organized by AMIT-CAT took place with great success in La Monroe de la Filmo. This edition counted with the participation of Ana M. López-Periago, from the ICMAB, who became second in the audience award, with her talk on "CO2: hero or villain?", in which she talked about the benefits of using supercritical CO2 in the preparation of materials. 

The project Greene3D, awarded as best initiative of circular economy by the Generalitat and the PRUAB

Laura López Mir, Doctor in Physics graduated at ICMAB, and Beatriz Espinosa, PhD researcher at ICTA, were awarded with the First Prize in the Program "Generació d'Idees", organized by the PRUAB and the Generalitat, for their Greene3D project: sustainable filament for 3D printing based on agroindustrial organic waste, such as olive stones, which are a valuable, abundant and a proximity resource. Congratulations!

Roberta Verrelli, winner of the 6th Early Career Scientist Presentation Contest of the World Materials Research Institute Forum

Between 18 and 22 June 2018, the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in Teddington (UK) hosted the 6th WMRIF Workshop for Early Career Scientists. From ICMAB, Roberta Verrelli, Francesca Leonardi and Ignasi Fina attended the workshop, which concentrated on exceptional early career scientists in World Materials Research Institute Forum (WMRIF) institutes with the goals of network building, and knowledge and experience exchange, along with the chance to examine facilities of the host institute.

Three ICMAB researchers have been granted with a Ramon y Cajal grant from the Spanish Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness.

Ignasi Fina, from the MULFOXgroup, in the area of Materials Science; Arántzazu González, from the FunNanoSurf group, in the area of Chemistry, and Judith Guasch, from the NANOMOLgroup, in the area of Biomedicine. Congratulations to all three!

Arnau Bertran: Premi Sant Jordi 2018 from the SCQ-IEC for his bacherlor's thesis

Arnau Bertran Inglada, who did his bachelor's thesis at ICMAB under the supervision of Gerard Tobias (ICMAB, Solid State Chemistry Group) and Àlvar Sánchez(UAB, Physics Dept) has been awarded with the "Premi Sant Jordi 2018" of the Societat Catalana de Química (SCQ-IEC) for his work entitled "Òxid de grafè reduït decorat amb nanopartícules d’òxid de ferro. Síntesi, caracterització i estudi magnètic"(Reduced graphene oxide decorated with iron oxide nanoparticles. Synthesis, characterization and magnetic study). 

NANOMOL group accredited with the TECNIO certification

NANOMOL Group has been accredited with the TECNIO certification as a Technology Developer Organization, until 2019. This TECNIO certification was created by the Government of Catalonia, through ACCIÓ. This certification supports the most qualified agents involved in technology transfer processes, allows companies to access advanced R&D and develop new products and services, and increases the scope of technology projects by finding the most suitable technology partners & suppliers.

Premis Ciutat de Barcelona 2017

The awardees with the Premis Ciutat de Barcelona 2017 have been known on February 1, 2018. The awards ceremony will take place on Thursday, February 15, at the Saló de Cent, in a ceremony presided by Ada Colau, and conducted by the journalist Eva Arderius. Prof. Xavier ObradorsICMAB Director, was member of the jury in the category "Experimental Sciences and Technology".

High interdisciplinarity and leadership within ICMAB researchers according to their h-index

A large number of ICMAB researchers are among those researchers in Spain with high h-index in many different disciplines: Applied Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Crystallography, Inorganic and Nuclear Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Multidisciplinary Chemistry, and Multidisciplinary Materials Science, according to the Web of Science. 

The website h-webcindario ( from GRUPO DIH, which compiles the h-index numbers from the researchers based in Spain, has done now the yearly update The h-index numbers are collected from the Web of Science ISI website, which is of free access for the research centers through FECYT.

New collaborative project between the MULFOX group and MIT, funded by “la Caixa” Foundation

Dr. Ignasi Finahas been recently awarded with a collaborative project, funded by "la Caixa" Foundation, with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT-SPAIN "la Caixa" Foundation SEED FUND). The project is focused on the investigation of new materials for photovoltaic applications. The aim is to study the use of a new kind of material, called a ferroelectric semiconductor, that may offer a powerful mechanism to convert sunlight into electricity.

ICMAB researchers at the monograph on "Condensed Matter" of the Revista Española de Física

The July-September issue of the Revista Española de Física (Vol 31, No 3) includes a monogaph of 41 pages on Condensed Matter. Some ICMAB researchers have contributed in some of the articles.

Research Award L'Oréal-Unesco FWIS 2017 for Mariona Coll and her project on new materials for photovoltaics

As we already announced on July 2017, Mariona Coll, researcher at the Institute of Materials Science (ICMAB) in the SUMAN group, has been awarded with the Research Award L'Oréal-Unesco "For Women in Science" 2017. The awards ceremony took place this last Wednesday, 22 November, in Madrid. Mariona will receive 15.000 € that will be invested in her research project which "can contribute to one of the most important challenges of this century: find a new energy system for the production of clean energy". 

Judith Guasch, awarded with a leader position of a Max Planck Partner Group

The ICMAB researcher Judith Guaschhas been appointed Leader of a Max Planck Partner Group(Dynamic Biomimetics for Cancer Immunotherapy) in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research (Heidelberg, Germany). This position, started this same 2017, strengthens the collaboration of ICMAB with the Max Planck Society through the research that Judith is performing, which is based on the development of biomimetic lymph nodes to help improving novel adoptive cell therapies, specially those designed to treat cancer.

La Prof Concepció Rovira ha estat nomenada com una de les IUPAC 2013 Distinguished Women in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering. El premi el concedeix la International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) entre les persones presentades per una societat de química. En aquest cas ha estat presentada per la European Association for Chemical and Molecular Sciences (EuCheMS) a instancies de la Societat Catalana de Química.

L’acte de lliurament del premi tindrà lloc en una cerimònia especial durant el “IUPAC World Congress” que es cel·lebrará a Istanbul del 11 al 16 d’Agost i que començarà amb el simposi Women in Chemistry: Gaining Momentum.

ESAS Prize to Marta Vilardell


ESAS awards biannually three prizes to researchers under the age of 30 for outstanding work presented in person by poster or oral during the EUCAS Conference. One prize is awarded in each of the three subject areas of EUCAS: Electronics, Large scale applications, and Materials.The main criteria for the award of these prizes are the originality of the work and the general quality of the poster or oral presentation. Each prize-winner receives a printed certificate and a monetary award.

David Amabilino has been awarded the Hermanos Elhuyar-Hans Goldschmidt Lectureship for 2011 (Premio Hispano-Alemán Hermanos Elhúyar-Hans Goldschmidt de 2011) an award presented jointly by theRoyal Spanish Chemical Societyand theGerman Chemical Society. As part of the award, three lectures will be presented in German Universities later in the year.

NANOMOL TECHNOLOGIES ha obtingut el premi Sabadell Ciutat Emprenedora al millor projecte empresarial de recerca. NANOMOL TECHNOLOGIES és una empresa de base tecnològica en procés de constitució que ha sorgit del grup de recerca NANOMOL de l'Institut de Ciència de Materials de Barcelona del CSIC i del PRUAB. La seva activitat empresarial es basarà en la explotació comercial de les tecnologies desenvolupades per aquest grup de recerca i que permeten obtenir principis actius, formes farmacèutiques i productes químics en forma de sòlids o suspensions amb mida de partícula micro- o nanoscòpica.

En la sessió del 30 de març de 2009, el Ple de l’Institut d’Estudis Catalans, a proposta d’una ponència integrada per Romà Tauler i Ferré (president de la Societat Catalana de Química) i Damià Barceló i Cullerés I Pilar González Duarte (membres de la Secció de Ciències i Tecnologia), ha acordat per unanimitat atorgar el Premi Antoni de Martí i Franquès de Ciències Químiques corresponent a l’any 2009 al senyor Josep Puigmartí i Luispel treball Organitzacions de tetratiafulvalens en monocapes i fils.

En Josep va realitzar la seva tesi sota la direcció d’en David Amabilino a l’Institut de Ciència de Materials de Barcelona (CSIC).

Premis Extraordinaris del Programa de doctorat de Química 2005-2006 per a doctors de l'ICMAB


La Dra. Arántzazu González Campo i Dr. Jordi Gómez Segura han rebut el premi extraordinari del Programa de doctorat de Química 2005-2006 el mes de novembre de 2008. Els criteris emprats per la Comissió en l'avaluació han estat basats fonamentalment en el nombre d’articles publicats i en el seu índex d’impacte.

La Dra. Arántzazu González Campo va defensar la tesi "Els clústers de bor com a integrants d’estructures dendrimèriques i materials híbrids" sota la direcció de la Dra. Rosario Núñez i el Dr. Jordi Gómez Segura va defensar la seva tesi "Síntesis, caracterización y estudio en superficies de imanes unimoleculares" sota la direcció del Dr. Daniel Ruiz-Molina






Distinció “Lectureship Giacomo Ciamician - Antonio González” a la Prof. Concepció Rovira de l’ICMAB

La Società Chimica Italiana li ha donat la distinció “Lectureship Giacomo Ciamician - Antonio González” a la Prof. Concepció Rovira de l’ICMAB. Aquesta distinció consisteix a donar varies conferències a Itàlia, la primera d’elles al Politecnico di Milano, i les altres a les Universitats de Como, Parma i Cagliari.
