Extraction of DNA and regenerative medicine: participation of ICMAB at the Pint of Science 2018 in Barcelona

Pint of Science, the festival that gathers people together in bars to listen to scientific presentations instead of watching a football match, has been a great success, with more than 20,000 participants around Spain. In Barcelona, 10 bars were hosting scientific talks during the three days of the festival (14, 15 and 16 May 2018). ICMAB was also represented, as we explained in a previous post: Javier Repetto in Casa Orlandai on Tuesday 15 May, and Irene Antonin Alfa Bar on Wednesday 16 May.

Casa Orlandai is 1870 building now used as a social center for the city. It has a bar downstairs with nice windows and lots of light. The topic of Tuesday's Pint of Science in Casa Orlandai was "Nanoviaje por el cuerpo humano". The first talk, by Elisabet Prats Alsonso, CIBER researcher at the Insitute of Microelectronics of Barcelona (IMB-CNM-CSIC), was about graphene electrodes for understanding our brain. A very interesting talk, and Elisabet is a great speaker. The second talk was by Eloy Pena Rodríguez, from Leitat Technological Center, was about nanomedicine in the film "Fantastic Voyage" and the current research on the topic. Javier Repetto, from the NANOMOL group at ICMAB, organized a workshop in-between the two talks: extraction of DNA from stawberries, using ethanol and soap. The attendees who participated could take home some of the extracted DNA.

Alfa Bar, in Gracia, hosted the talks on skin "Ens hi juguem la pell!" on Wednesday. Irene Anton gave a talk on regenerative medicine, focusing on the case skin. Irene, from the Nanoparticles and Nanocomposites group, works with bacterial cellulose, a biopolymer, for biomedical applications. In her talk we could see the current and the future methods for skin regeneration. Before her talk, Remei Català, from Antonio Puig, talked about the UV radiations and the different types of sunscreen and protection from the sun.

In total, more than 56 cities have participated in Spain, with a total of 730 scientists giving talks, 400 volunteers organizing the festival, and more than 20,000 participants. Yes, science also has its place outside the lab!
