The Institut Joaquima Pla i Farreras from Sant Cugat visits ICMAB and learns the secret of batteries!

On Friday, 16 February, we received the visit of a class of 1st BTX students from Institut Joaquima Pla i Farreras (Sant Cugat) who came to learn about "The nanomaterials of the future for energy" and, particularly, those for batteries. Dr. Dino Tonti, from the Solid State Chemistry Group, gave a talk on nanotechnology, materials for energy and focused on batteries, and on his research on lithium and sodium batteries.

Celebrating the International Day of Women and Girls in Science at ICMAB

During the second and third weeks of February, the ICMAB will be celebrating the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, which was declared in 2016 by the United Nations to be on February, 11.

This day is being celebrated by other research centers, universities, science museums and other institutions and associations related to science, in order to raise awareness of the persistent gender gap in science, and raise the profile of the work of female scientists. The global goal of is to achieve a full and equal access and participation in science for women and girls, and to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.

ICMAB will participate in the next edition of "Dissabtes de la Física" at UAB

Starting on 3 February, 2018, and during 5 consecutive Saturdays, the Faculty of Sciences of the UAB will host the XVIII Edition of the "Dissabtes de la Física" (Saturdays of Physics). An initiative of the Department of Physics, whose main objective is to bring physics and science to pre-university young students, and motivate them to know the world that surrounds us in a rigorous and, at the same time, comprehensible way.

Highschool students from Institut Castellbisbal visit ICMAB

On 19 January 2018 we received the visit of a group of highschool students from Institut Castellbisbal. The students listened first to our Communication and Outreach Officer, who welcomed them and explained them where they were and the work we do at ICMAB, and then to a seminar on "The materials of the future for nanomedicine" given by Dr. Judith Guasch, from the NANOMOL group. The seminar was followed by a visit to four of our laboratories: X-ray diffraction, AFM, SoftLab and the lab of Dr. Judith Guasch.

Barcelona, 24 MAY 2018: Jornada sobre Nanotoxicidad

On Thursday, 24 May 2018, MATERPLAT co-organizes together with NanomedSpain and the NANBIOSIS network, a morning event on Nanotoxicity (Jornada de Nanotoxicidad) at the Parc Científic de Barcelona to debate about the toxicity of nanoparticles and nanotechnologies in the field of health.

The 10alamenos9 Festival of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology arrives to its 3rd edition! The physicists Xavier Obradors, ICMAB Director, and Ignasi Ribas, Director of the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (Institut d'Estudis Espacials de Catalunya, IEEC), gave a joint lecture for the celebration of the 90th anniversary of the Institute "Lluís de Peguera" in Manresa (26 October 2017), in which they both went as students. Their dialogue "From nanoscience to space" was followed by an enthusiast audience eager to learn.

19 DEC: Christmas Lecture at ICMAB: "Re-reading Curie" by Xavier Roqué

This year, to celebrate Christmas, on Tuesday, December 19, we will have with us Xavier Roqué, Senior Lecturer in History of Science at UAB and member of the Phylosophy Dept. and of the Center for the History of Science (UAB). Xavier will give a Christmas Lecture entitled "Re-reading Curie", in which he will suggest new readings of, probably, the best-known woman scientist of the twentieth century: Marie Skłodowska Curie

After the seminar, there will be the traditional Christmas Concert by the ICMAB choir and the Christmas Buffet for all our staff.

Becoming a Materials Detective for a day: interactive school visits at ICMAB

Within the program "El CSIC a l'aula", and the "Program of school activities from the Barcelona City Council" (PAE), the ICMAB opens its doors to Primary School students for the first time, and welcomes 10-11 years-old kids to visit their installations. One of the most successful activities proposed is the one called "Converteix-te en un detectiu de materials"(Become a materials detective).

The program "Un investigador a la teva aula" brings Andrés Gómez and his AFM kit to Sant Joan Baptista school

Andrés Gómez has spent one hour and a half with students aged 10-11 years old (5è de Primària) at the Sant Joan Baptista school, in La Barceloneta (Barcelona) on 29 November 2017. Andrés Gómez, specialist and responsible for the Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) laboratory at ICMAB, explained the kids the mysteries of science, nanotechnology, and even made some lab experiments.

The "Desena Trobada de Joves Investigadors dels Països Catalans" (10th Meeting of Young Researchers of the Catalan Countries) was held this year on 29-30 January 2018 at the Institut d'Estudis Catalans (IEC) in Barcelona. The Institut Bisbe Sevilla from Calella at ICMAB learning about the nanomaterials of the future for electronics

On December 15 the Institut Bisbe Sevilla, from Calella, visited ICMAB and spent the morning with us. Two projects from ICMAB researchers at the FINAL of the PRUAB Program "Generació d'Idees"

On November 30, 2017, the FINAL of the sixth edition of the "Generació d'Idees" Program, organized by the UAB Research Park (PRUAB) and the "Xarxa de Referència en Biotecnologia" took place. In this year's edition, two projects from ICMAB researchers were on the final: Plant Healing, with the participation of Agnesse Rabissi, from the NN Group, and Saddle Pro, with the participation of Pablo O. Vaccaro, from the NANOPTO group.

The winning project of this year's edition was "Nanoplastics", which aims to create a biodegradable film to increase the safety of fresh food packaging and to extent the shelf life of these products. The project is formed by researchers from ICN2, CRAG and INC-UAB.

ICMAB at ExpoMiner: The science talks and demos attracted more than 450 visitors

ICMAB participated on 10,11,12 November 2017 at ExpoMiner, the exhibition of minerals, fossils and jewelry, with some outreach talks given by four of our researchers, and science demos in our stand about superconducting materials, photovoltaic energy, batteries and graphene. According to ExpoMiner, which highlighted that the science talks and demos had been very popular among the visitors, all the talks and workshops of the exhibition attracted more than 450 visitors, which represented a 12.5 % increase respect to last year
